What is Self-Directed Support?
Self-directed support (SDS) is about choice and control. It allows individuals and families to design a support plan that meets their unique needs and aspirations. At its heart, SDS is about people having the freedom to live the lives they want, with the right support, at the right time.
Our approach is person-centred, meaning we work with each individual to build support around their goals, not a service. We aim to promote independence and inclusion in the local community through tailored 1:1 support.
Our 1:1 support is more than just practical help – it’s a partnership built on trust, respect, and understanding. Every support plan is designed with the person at the centre, considering their hopes, preferences, and strengths.
Person Centred Care
We help people to build routines, develop new skills, make meaningful connections and take part in community life in a way that suits them. Our person-centred care is about supporting personal growth and positive experiences. These may include:
- Helping people achieve their personal goals and outcomes
- Building confidence through consistent, encouraging relationships
- Supporting learning and skills development
- Encouraging participation in local community activities and events
Responsive Support
Our support can quickly adapt to the changing needs, perspectives, and feedback of the individuals receiving our care. Our staff are skilled in managing all types of communications, including positive and distressed interactions by:
- Responding in ways that are calming and respectful
- Ensuring the individual feels safe, heard and supported
- Using these moments to improve understanding and inform future support planning.
Self-Directed Support
What options are available once I have my SDS budget?
Option 1: Direct Payment
A cash payment is paid directly to you or a third party, allowing you to control the choice of support you would like. You organise and manage the complete care package.
Option 2: Individual Service Fund
You choose the care provider you would like, and the local authority or care provider holds your budget and makes arrangements for care on your behalf, taking into consideration your choices and preferences.
Option 3: Direct Service
The local authority decides on support and arranges it on your behalf.
Option 4: A combination
A mixture of all of the options above that meets your preferences.
